Egypt was home to some of the most intriguing gods and goddesses of antiquity, and its pantheon put even the ancient Romans and Greeks to shame. In fact, the ghosts of these old gods can still be sensed along the Nile, which remains unchanged since those more superstitious days. By taking a Nile river cruise, you too can experience that magical landscape, that gave birth to such fantastical divinities.
Such were the range of gods and goddesses that the Egyptians worshipped, that it really is true to say that they had a god for any occasion! For example, anybody considering a Nile cruise will be please to know that even the Nile’s annual floods were defied to the God Hapy.
Hapy is perhaps one of the least familiar gods. However, there were many more that you may be aware of many other Egyptian Gods, which you may recognise when you witness many monuments and hieroglyphics all along the Nile.
For example, the God Anubis, who is immediately recognised as a Jackal headed God, was the God of mummification, and general guardian of the necropolis. Due to his Jackal head he is perhaps one of the most recognizable – if not frightening – of all the Gods, so its worth keeping an eye out for him when you’re on your Nile cruise.
Another famous god is the God Thoth, who like Anubis has an animal head – his being of an Ibis bird. So whilst your perhaps keeping an eye out for some real Ibises why not see if you can spot any icons of Thoth whilst enjoying your Nile river cruise.
