Explore Egypt’s History with a Nile Cruise

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

If you are fascinated by the history or culture of Egypt then a Nile cruise could be an ideal way to indulge your interests. Not only will you be able to observe modern Egyptian culture, as your ship cruises by the day-to-day lives of the riverbank farmers, but you will also have the opportunity to explore Egypt’s past during the optional excursions provided as part of your cruise.

When the Nile cruise ships stop in Luxor, you have the chance to visit one of the most famous archeological sites in the world – the Valley of the Kings. For nearly 500 years the royalty of Egypt were buried at this location and during your excursion you will have the chance to see some of these tombs up close. The Valley of the Kings is also the burial site of Tutankhamun, although there is usually an extra charge to visit his tomb.

Luxor is also home to the Colossi of Memnon. These twin statues are more than 3,000 years old and once stood guard at the gateway to a temple.

During a stop at Aswan, you might want to join an excursion to see the Philae Temple complex. This World Heritage Site was moved stone by stone to a safer location by UNESCO in 1960 after repeated floods began to damage the site.

These are just a few of the excursions available to you as part of our Nile cruises. If you’d like to find out more about these trips or the packages that we offer please take a look around our website or feel free to call us on 0800 328 0871.

Be Savvy When Packing to Get the Most from Your Nile Cruise

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

When you are preparing for your Nile cruise, it can be hard to keep your head. After all, the excitement of trips like this can be somewhat overwhelming. The thought of travelling to such an ancient and fascinating land, and seeing in person sights that you have studied in textbooks and watched in numerous films is certainly tantalising.

However, despite your enthusiasm, it pays off to be pragmatic and level-headed at this stage. If you make sure you pack everything you need, you will be able to get the most out of your break.

It can help to do some research online in case there are any items you would not have thought of taking on Nile cruises that other people recommend. Of course you will pack clothes and other essentials, but there may be certain things you neglect.

For example, it can pay off to take plenty of protection from the sun, particularly if you are going during the hottest parts of the year. The strength of solar rays in the north African nation are on a different scale to those seen in the UK and so plenty of sun cream and light, airy garments are a necessity.

Also, it is advisable to take sun glasses. Not only is it usually sunny, but when you are out and about in sandy areas, the glare can be considerable, making it hard to look properly at the wonderful monuments and other sights of interest on offer. But a simple pair of specs can make all the difference.

Preparing properly for your Egypt Nile cruise is a must.

Taking Photos in the Gorgeous Egypt Sun

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Nile cruise holidays are a once in a lifetime experience… every time! Sound a little too paradoxical? Although one of the most established and culturally rich lands on earth, you’ll never visit the same Egypt twice. Experience all  Egypt has to offer from the culture to the people to the food, and splendid photography is a great way to keep the memory alive.

•    The Egyptian climate and landscape can play havoc with your device (whether digital or film). Always use a camera case and avoid leaving your camera in the sun for any length of time.

•    Tell a story with your photos. Remember to record at least a few shots of everything, no matter how small (it’s the little things that make a great vacation!)

•    Adapt your style. A mix of contrasting techniques and styles paints wonderfully diverse pictures of your nile cruise. If you visit the market during your time of the cruise, opt for point-and-shoot style; try not to think too hard about framing photos etc, just point and shoot to catch the lively hubbub of Egypt’s shopping and street culture (you can always delete the bad pictures later).

•    Never take photographs with the sun behind you or directly in front of your lens. Great photographs balance light and shadow, something that tends to be lacking when the sun is directly behind/in front of you. Try to angle shots to give a nice amount of shadow and light, enhancing depth and perspective.

•    Desert or large landscape shots need context, so try to include a camel, a pyramid, the Sphinx – anything to lend circumstance to the photo.

Mysteries of Egypt… to Keep on Your Nightstand

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Depending on which of our Nile cruise holidays peaks your interest, setting Egypt’s old versus new culture in the most understandable light possible is a great idea. Something we have to admit is a guilty pleasure of ours is indulging in a little Egypt-set mystery reading from our favourite mystery writers like Agatha Christie and Elizabeth Peters. Here are three of our favourite holiday reads!

•   Eater of Souls (Linda. S. Robinson)
Set during the reign of the boy king Tutankhamen, the fourth book in Robinson’s series is a wonderfully detailed, fast-paced and thrilling window into the life of Lord Meren (Chief Advisor to the king) and his dangerous investigation into the suspicious death of Queen Nefertiti.

•    Death On the Nile (Agatha Christie)
To catch the killer of a newlywed heiress murdered on her honeymoon, the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot must analyse each and every suspect aboard a luxury Nile cruise ship.

•    The Serpent on the Crown (Elizabeth Peters)
Amelia Peabody, promising Egyptologist and amateur sleuth, sets her wits against the supposed curse placed on a suspicious statue uncovered in post WW1 Egypt.  Elizabeth Peters (a pseudonym used by noted Egyptologist and writer of both academic and fiction works, Barbara Mertz) is one of the best writers of historical thrillers based in and around Egypt. Any of her Amelia Peabody series make ideal whimsical companion reading on a Nile cruise. You can’t stick to the guide book all the time!

For a Trip with a Difference Take a Nile Cruise

Friday, April 15th, 2011

If you are trying to plan your summer holiday this year, your thoughts might immediately turn to far-flung sandy shores, margaritas, reclining deckchairs and other such things. After all, trips like this that let you soak up some sun while relaxing on a beach can be the perfect way to unwind and recharge your batteries.

However, if you book this kind of vacation year in, year out, it may start to get a bit samey. In the end, all your holiday memories may blur into one, indistinguishable blur. And since you are spending your hard-earned cash on the trips, this is a shame.

And the point is you can get enough of this seaside rest and rejuvenation while also managing to pack in some adventures to remember if you head on an Egypt Nile cruise. These packages can be tailored so that you can get your perfect balance of sun bathing and exploring.

For example, we offer a range of vacations that might be ideal for you and your fellow travellers. Our Nile cruises allow you to indulge yourself in sublime restfulness, while also providing you with the chance to get out and about and see some of the best things this ancient country has to offer.

There are few nations that can claim to have such a rich cultural heritage, as well as such magnificent buildings and monuments.

When you return from your Nile river cruises, you will certainly have plenty of wonderful memories, and no doubt some fantastic pictures too. Surely this beats a generic package deal to somewhere that offers beaches and little else.
