The needle was encased in a specially built cage and towed behind the ship ‘Olga.’ Bad weather around the stormy Bay of Biscay separated the needle and it was almost lost at sea. Luckily, a merchant ship collected the needle and it landed on our shores in early 1878.

Cleopatra’s needle is now flanked by two large Egyptian lions and looks impressive to visitors to our country.
