Historically, Aswan has the only granite quarry in Egypt. The granite rocks make rapids which jutting out make it impassable for Nile cruise ships to come too close. However, moorings were made possible for steamers and Nile river ships on the Aswan cornice.
This riverside town is well known as a skiing resort in the winter. In the summer months, it is rumoured that if visitors come to the resort with certain ailments the dry heat will cure them.
Just further inland there is Sharia-el-Souq; a bustling market which has a reputation for its unusual spices.
